France (Nice and Monaco) Outreach 2023: Spreading Evangelism in France

Our second outreach trip this year was to preach Evangelism in France in September 2023. France is a sizeable country (approximately 68 million inhabitants). Blessed, (especially in the South) with warm sunny weather. We have visited France on three occasions previously. On those occasions we travelled on a touring motorcycle covering many thousands of miles around the country. France has lovely scenery, and in parts, breathtakingly so. The French culture is unmistakable, and its people are warm. If you try using the French language, they are more than happy to meet you half-way.

This time was our first visit to Nice, which is on the South coast. We had been through Montpellier and had stayed in Arle and Sete way back in 2002 and 2007. We remembered Arle’s fabulous outdoor market that stretched along the city walls and its Roman amphitheatre. Sete was a lovely town, that the French keep mostly to themselves. Originally a fishing port that boasts a beautiful theatre, architecture, and quaint metal swing bridges, locks and marinas with boats a plenty.

This outreach centred on Nice, a city with the airport at one end and the old city on the other. Nice is a large City with a population of around 950 thousand people. No motorcycle this time, we flew in and had a hotel booked in the old part of the city.

Firstly, we missed our flight (more on this in the forthcoming blog). We had other issues that are too lengthy to mention here. (Sometimes the enemy tries to put up roadblocks and hindrances to stop you).

The weather during our stay was beautiful, warm throughout, and a couple of days were hot. This was particularly so when we went to Monaco and did some evangelism there (more on this in the blog). What can we say, Nice is a bustling city and a tourist hotspot. Its marina has many small, and some very large boats and yachts. Clearly a city of contrasting wealth and standing.

We discussed Evangelism in France on the old square (Place Guiseppe Garibaldi) and had discussions with some locals selling paintings and art. We helped some of the homeless there, and down near the Church of Gesu in the Old city. This was over two days.

We assisted a man who had difficulty walking, and a lady trying to climb the Colline Du Chateau parkland and see the waterfall. More of these in the blog. The views from the top of the climb are stunning though it takes a bit of effort to get there. For those who are less mobile and elderly, there is a bus (train on wheels) ride up from the old city.

Nice’s beach had many sunbathers and people swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. There was a busy night life in Nice, and many young people in the streets and squares. We noticed a distinct change in driving styles from previous visits (more of this on the blog). The food was great as always, the French people as ever embrace the Irish and are hospitable.
